How the Canada Child Benefit is calculated

The CCB is a tax-free monthly payment for families with children under 18. Each benefit year runs from July to June and is based on your adjusted family net income from the previous year, so payments from July 2026 to June 2027 use your 2025 income.

Child's ageMaximum a yearMaximum a month
Under 6$8,157$679.75
6 to 17$6,883$573.58

Families with income up to $38,237 get the maximum. Above that, the benefit is reduced by a percentage of income, depending on how many children you have:

ChildrenIncome $38,237 to $82,847Income over $82,847
17% of income over $38,237$3,123 + 3.2% of income over $82,847
213.5%$6,022 + 5.7%
319%$8,476 + 8%
4 or more23%$10,260 + 9.5%

Example

A family with one child under 6, one child aged 6 to 17 and a 2025 family net income of $60,000 can get up to $15,040 a year. Their income is $21,763 over the first threshold, so the benefit is reduced by 13.5% of that, $2,938.01. They get $12,101.99 a year, or about $1,008.50 a month.

Frequently asked questions

When is the CCB paid?

The CCB is paid monthly, usually around the 20th. If your benefit for the year is under $240, it is paid in one lump sum in July instead.

Do I have to file a tax return to get it?

Yes. You and your spouse or common-law partner must both file a tax return every year, even if you had no income, or your payments can stop.

What is the Child Disability Benefit?

It is an extra amount of up to $3,480 a year for each child who is eligible for the disability tax credit. It is also reduced at higher family incomes, so this calculator shows the maximum.
