How overtime pay works in the UK

There is no legal right to be paid extra for overtime in the UK. Whether you get time and a half, double time or your normal rate depends on your contract or your employer's policy. Some employers give time off in lieu instead.

What the law does say is that your average pay for all the hours you work, including overtime, must not fall below the National Minimum Wage. From 1 April 2026 the National Living Wage for workers aged 21 and over is £12.71 an hour.

Example

At £15 an hour for 37.5 hours, plus 6 hours of overtime at time and a half (£22.50 an hour), you earn £562.50 + £135 = £697.50 for the week, an average of £16.03 an hour. Worked every week, that is £36,270 a year.
