How EI regular benefits are calculated

For most people, EI regular benefits are 55% of your average insurable weekly earnings, up to a maximum. For claims starting on or after December 28, 2025, the maximum insurable earnings are $68,900 a year, so the most you can receive is $729 a week.

Yearly insurable earningsWeekly benefitOver 15 weeks
$36,400 ($700 a week)$385.00$5,775.00
$50,000$528.85$7,932.75
$68,900 or more$729.00 (maximum)$10,935.00

Your average is worked out from your highest-earning weeks in the qualifying period, usually the last 52 weeks. The number of weeks used, called your best weeks, ranges from 14 to 22 depending on the unemployment rate in your region.

Frequently asked questions

Is EI taxable?

Yes. EI benefits are taxable income, and federal and provincial tax is usually deducted from each payment. You get a T4E slip to include on your tax return.

When does EI start?

There is usually a one-week waiting period at the start of a claim, during which you are not paid. Apply as soon as you stop working, even if you have not yet received your record of employment.

Can I work while on EI?

Yes. Under the working while on claim rules, you keep 50 cents of your benefit for every dollar you earn, up to 90% of your previous weekly earnings. Above that, your benefit is reduced dollar for dollar.

This calculator gives an estimate for guidance only. It does not decide whether you qualify or how many weeks you are entitled to. Some low-income families with children can get a higher rate through the Family Supplement. Source: Government of Canada: EI regular benefits, how much you could receive.
