How your paycheck is calculated

Four main deductions come off your gross pay. This calculator applies each one for the 2026 tax year.

  1. Federal income tax. Charged in seven brackets after the standard deduction of $16,100 for single filers or $32,200 for married couples filing jointly.
  2. State income tax. Each state sets its own rates. Nine states have no tax on wages: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming.
  3. Social Security. 6.2% of your wages up to $184,500, a maximum of $11,439 in 2026.
  4. Medicare. 1.45% of all wages, plus an extra 0.9% on wages over $200,000 ($250,000 for married couples).

Traditional 401(k) contributions lower your federal and state income tax (except in Pennsylvania), but not Social Security or Medicare. Pre-tax health insurance and HSA contributions made through your employer lower all of them.

Frequently asked questions

How much is $75,000 a year after taxes?

For a single filer in a state with no income tax, such as Texas or Florida, a $75,000 salary leaves about $61,593 a year after federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare in 2026, or $5,133 a month. In California it is about $58,805, and in New York about $58,140.

Which states have no income tax?

Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming do not tax wages. Washington taxes some capital gains, but not pay.

Why is my real paycheck different?

Your employer withholds tax based on your W-4 form, one pay period at a time, so withholding rarely matches your final tax exactly. Credits such as the child tax credit, other deductions, and city or county income taxes (for example in New York City, Maryland counties, Ohio cities and Pennsylvania municipalities) are not included here.

This calculator gives an estimate for guidance only. State figures use each state's standard deduction, personal exemptions and credits but not every phase-out or local tax. Sources: IRS federal income tax rates and brackets, Social Security Administration, and the Tax Foundation.
