How to convert a salary to an hourly rate
Divide your annual salary by the number of hours you work in a year. A full-time job of 37.5 hours a week for 52 weeks is 1,950 hours, so a £30,000 salary is £30,000 ÷ 1,950 = £15.38 an hour.
To go the other way, multiply your hourly rate by your weekly hours and then by 52. For example, £13 an hour × 37.5 hours × 52 weeks = £25,350 a year.
| Annual salary | Hourly (37.5 h/week) | Hourly (40 h/week) |
|---|---|---|
| £25,000 | £12.82 | £12.02 |
| £30,000 | £15.38 | £14.42 |
| £40,000 | £20.51 | £19.23 |
| £50,000 | £25.64 | £24.04 |
Frequently asked questions
How many working hours are there in a year?
At 37.5 hours a week it is 1,950 hours a year, and at 40 hours a week it is 2,080, if you count all 52 weeks including paid holiday.
Should I include paid holiday?
For a salaried job, yes: your salary covers the weeks you are on paid holiday too, so divide by all 52 weeks. If you are only paid for hours you work, use fewer weeks to compare fairly.
