Sales tax rates by province in 2026
| Province or territory | Tax | Total rate |
|---|---|---|
| Alberta | 5% GST | 5% |
| British Columbia | 5% GST + 7% PST | 12% |
| Manitoba | 5% GST + 7% RST | 12% |
| New Brunswick | 15% HST | 15% |
| Newfoundland and Labrador | 15% HST | 15% |
| Northwest Territories | 5% GST | 5% |
| Nova Scotia | 14% HST | 14% |
| Nunavut | 5% GST | 5% |
| Ontario | 13% HST | 13% |
| Prince Edward Island | 15% HST | 15% |
| Quebec | 5% GST + 9.975% QST | 14.975% |
| Saskatchewan | 5% GST + 6% PST | 11% |
| Yukon | 5% GST | 5% |
Nova Scotia's HST fell from 15% to 14% on April 1, 2025. Provincial sales tax (PST, RST and QST) is charged on the price before GST, so the two taxes are simply added together.
How to calculate GST and HST
To add tax, multiply the price by 1 plus the rate. For $100 in Ontario: $100 × 1.13 = $113, so the HST is $13.
To remove tax from a total, divide by 1 plus the rate. For $113 in Ontario: $113 ÷ 1.13 = $100. Taking 13% off $113 would give $98.31, which is wrong.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between GST and HST?
GST is the 5% federal goods and services tax charged across Canada. In New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario and Prince Edward Island, the GST and the provincial sales tax are combined into a single harmonized sales tax (HST).
When does a business have to register for GST/HST?
Most businesses must register once their taxable sales go over $30,000 in a single calendar quarter or over four consecutive calendar quarters. Below that, you are a small supplier and registration is optional.
Is everything taxed at the same rate?
No. Basic groceries, prescription drugs and many medical devices are zero-rated, and some services such as most health care and residential rent are exempt. Provinces with their own PST also have their own lists of exemptions.
