How TFSA room works
You build up TFSA room every year from the year you turn 18 and live in Canada, even if you do not open an account. Unused room carries forward forever. Money you withdraw is added back to your room on January 1 of the following year.
Anyone who was 18 or older and living in Canada in 2009 and has never contributed has $109,000 of room in 2026. Someone who turned 18 in 2020 has $45,500.

Frequently asked questions
What happens if I put in too much?
The CRA charges a tax of 1% a month on the highest amount you are over your limit, until you withdraw the excess or new room becomes available. There is no $2,000 allowance as there is for an RRSP.
Do investment gains use up my room?
No. Only the money you pay in counts. Interest, dividends and growth inside the account are tax-free and do not reduce your room. If you withdraw them, the full amount withdrawn is added back the next year.
Where can I check my exact room?
Your TFSA room is shown in CRA My Account. It may not include contributions made this year, so keep your own record.
