Capital gains tax calculator
Find out how much tax you will pay when you sell stocks, funds, crypto or other investments for a profit, using the 2026 federal rates and your state's income tax.
2026 long-term capital gains tax rates
Gains on assets you owned for more than a year are taxed at 0%, 15% or 20%, depending on your total taxable income. The gain sits on top of your other income, so part of it can fall in one band and part in the next.
| Rate | Single (taxable income) | Married filing jointly |
|---|---|---|
| 0% | Up to $49,450 | Up to $98,900 |
| 15% | $49,450 to $545,500 | $98,900 to $613,700 |
| 20% | Over $545,500 | Over $613,700 |
Short-term gains, on assets held for a year or less, are taxed as ordinary income at your normal federal rates of 10% to 37%.
Net investment income tax
If your modified adjusted gross income is over $200,000 (single) or $250,000 (married filing jointly), you also pay 3.8% on the smaller of your investment income or the amount you are over the threshold.
Examples
- A single filer earning $75,000 with a $20,000 long-term gain pays $3,000 in federal tax (15%). If the gain were short-term, it would be $4,400. Living in California adds about $1,818 of state tax.
- A single filer with $30,000 of wages and a $100,000 long-term gain pays $9,667.50, because the first $35,550 of the gain falls in the 0% band.
Frequently asked questions
Do I pay capital gains tax when I sell my home?
Usually not on most of it. You can exclude up to $250,000 of gain ($500,000 for married couples filing jointly) on your main home if you owned and lived in it for at least two of the last five years. This calculator does not apply that exclusion, so enter only the part above it.
Can losses reduce my capital gains tax?
Yes. Capital losses offset capital gains, and up to $3,000 of net losses a year can be deducted from other income, with the rest carried forward. Enter your net gain after losses.
Which states do not tax capital gains?
States with no income tax on wages, such as Texas, Florida and Nevada, generally do not tax capital gains either. Washington is an exception: it taxes long-term gains above a large annual threshold. Most other states tax gains like ordinary income.
Estimate only. Collectibles, some real estate gains and qualified small business stock follow different rules. Sources: IRS Topic 409, capital gains and losses, IRS net investment income tax.
