How much to tip in the US
| Bill | 15% | 18% | 20% | 25% |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $50 | $7.50 | $9.00 | $10.00 | $12.50 |
| $100 | $15.00 | $18.00 | $20.00 | $25.00 |
At sit-down restaurants, 15% to 20% of the bill is the usual range, with 20% common for good service. Servers are often paid a lower cash wage and rely on tips, which is why tipping is expected.
Example
A $85.40 dinner bill with a 20% tip comes to $102.48. Split three ways at 18%, each person pays $33.59. Rounded up, each pays $34, for a total of $102 and a tip of $16.60.
Frequently asked questions
Should I tip on the total before or after tax?
Either is acceptable. Many people tip on the amount before tax, while tipping on the total is slightly more generous.
How do I work out 20% quickly?
Move the decimal point one place left to get 10%, then double it. On a $64 bill, 10% is $6.40, so 20% is $12.80.
